Multimedia Concert: Songs and Images of Mexican Labor in Illinois

Wednesday, September 23rd @ 4:30-6:30 @ GSU

Chuy Negrete, with guitar in hand, weaves together song, story, poetry, historic photographs and iconic artworks to tell the tale of the Mexican workers who have come to Illinois since the 19th century to toil in its fields and factories. Using the corrido (running-verse ballad) and other traditional and contemporary Mexican musical forms, Negrete tells of the social and economic pressures that led Mexicans to migrate to Illinois and celebrates the new lives they invented here.
