Your Library Card

Getting a card, renewing materials, placing holds, etc.

Who can get a card
Residents of Steger and South Chicago Heights are eligible for a library card.

Non-residence fees
If you are not a resident of Steger or South Chicago Heights, you do not have a card at any other SWAN library, and would like to apply for a card, you may do so by paying a non-residence fee. Come in to the library for more information.

How to Get Your Card
To get your very own library card, simply bring a government issued photo ID and two proofs of residency to the library and fill out an application. (If you are under 18, bring a parent/guardian with you as well.)

Acceptable Photo IDs:

  • Valid Drivers License
  • Valid State ID
  • Military ID
  • Firearm Owner's Identification (FOID)

Acceptable Proof of Residency

If your photo ID does not have your current/correct address on it, you will need to bring two (2) of the following items.  If your photo ID does have your current/correct address on it, you will only need one (1) of the following:

  • Current utility bill (electric, water, gas)
  • Voter's Registration Card
  • Tax Bill
  • Mortgage Statement
  • Bank Statement

Borrowing Limits

  • DVDs: Three (5) per card (Age 15+).
  • CDs: Unlimited (Limit of 30 total items on card).
  • Books: Limit of 30 total items per card.

Placing Holds

Holds on items can be placed in three ways:

  • From the catalog located on our homepage.
  • From the SWAN website.
  • Or come in and ask a librarian to place the hold for you. (excludes DVD and VHS items)

Renewing Your Borrowed Items

  • The SWAN website
  • In person at the library
  • Over the phone at (708) 755-5040

Length of Library Loans

  • Books/Magazines/CDs/ebooks/digital cameras/flip cameras/Kindles: 2 weeks
  • DVDs (Juvenile and Adult): 3 days
  • Interlibrary Loan: dependent on the lending library, though typically 3 weeks.

Library Fines

  • Audio and Print Material: $0.10 / day
  • DVDs/video games/digital cameras/flip cameras: $2.00/ day
  • Interlibrary loan materials: fine assessed by lending library
